Heath's last two rides of the test.....

Sherco 290 (older design model)

Last year was weird... at the test for the 2004 model Sherco I loved the bike, so much so that after most had gone home I ended up having another extended play. Then when I rode the 2005 model I didn't like it... why I don't know, it just didn't feel right. May be it was because in between I had purchased a GasGas Pro and got used to that but the 2005 that I rode just didn't do it for me..

When I got on this 2005 and a half model I thought much the same.. It seemed very low as I kept sumping it out on rocks I had just ridden the Pro over and the front felt very heavy to turn. But the more I rode it the better I started to feel on it. It was like a cross between the Pro and the Beta in that it is lightweight but rides more solid on the ground. The heavy feeling front end allowed it to track across the loose small rocks very well without that feeling of being knocked off line easily and the back popped the rear up onto things, which was just as well as it cured my sumping out problem!!

The 290 engine is very smooth, no sudden rip your arms off moment. It powers all the way through lovely and has that feeling that it would grip well in the mud... the one thing we didn't have at the venue to try. ...

... Of all the bikes I had ridden up untill this point this was the one that, by the end of the ride time, I felt that I would get better results in trials on. Because nothing jumped out and grabbed me about it the bike I was a bit confused at the end of the ride.. then I figured out why, the whole package had gelled together nicely for me.

After I had handed the bike back I realised that I had ridden the same sections as on the other bikes but a lot smoother, no dramas but also no spectacular moves were required.

The grey base colour of the plastics is far better than the old Blue models, it doesn't seem to look so scuffed and used so quickly... and I have to say that stood next to the new Black frame model I prefered the older one. When the press pictures for the new model were released I fell in love with the black and yellow colour scheme but in the flesh I was a bit underwhelmed. I kept an eye on the new one throughout the day to see how it faired and by the end the frame was already a bit scuffed around the boot area... I would suggest that YooMee would do worse than to get some frame protectors in production along the lines of the Pro ones they do... but a bit shorter.! The trouble with blck is that it looks very nice new but really shows up when scratched through.

So.. the sherco took 2nd place for me today. But the winner was...

Beta Rev3 270...

I can hear it now... shortly Stu Essenhigh will be on the phone having a go at me after all the piss taking I have done about his Rev3!!

You know that feeling you get when something is just right?... when something feels like it was made for you... well this is it!! I have had a soft spot for Beta's for many years, since my TR34 in 1988 in fact. I have never managed to ride the 270, every year I have ridden the 125, 200 and 250 but never managed a ride of the big boys toy!! But now that has changed and I am left with the disappointment of knowing that I can't afford one...

Within 50 metres of getting on this bike i knew it was for me, the engine felt lovely, the riding position was totaly spot on and i love the new colours. Then I rode it across the loose rocks and it tracked staright across, and no hint of front end problems across the camber that followed. When I did my normal clumsy attempt at the larger rocks it just rode over them and when I thumped it into the rocky climb it rode straight up it with no hint of unwanted kick back, like the sherco this gave the impression that it would grip like mad in the muddy stuff...

... It rode up things so smoothly that when it came to riding the pile of rocks as seen above I must have looked crap as I was waiting for the kick at the top and the front to disapear and all it did was ride over the top like it was a kerbside!! The engine power is perfect for how I like things, very powerfull but no big step in the curve. I would certainly never be short of grunt on this... my bottle would run out long before the engine found it's limit!!

There is no doubt that I would need to alter my riding style, with the Pro I tend to be aggressive and like to launch it at things and it seems to respond to that... the beta was happy just being ridden badly up things!!

The front end, once again, felt a little heavy compared to my own bike but then I think everything does these days, including the new Pro. But when i tried a bit of hopping it came around well, and so did the back end. I use the fact that my Pro is much lighter than most bikes to do the rear end hop... it flatters the fact that I am not that good at it but the rear end of the Rev3 went around just as easily. And landed much more smoothly with no kick back to unbalance me, I need all the help i can get to keep my feet up!!

Bad points.... about all I can say is that, like the 200, I am not sure if the matt black rear mudguard end will stay looking new for long, the front brake lever was loose on the test bike.... and the ride wasn't long enough!!!

If I was spending over 3 grand on a new bike i would choose this bike, It rode so smooth and stable, looks great in the new colours and as I would have to keep a bike for 3 years I feel that the bike will still be in good condition after a season or two... the finish is notably better than the 2 Spanish 2 strokes.

So let the piss taking begin!!!... But the reality is, there is no way I can afford a new bike. I am more than happy with my trusty GasGas. The day has also showed that there isn't a bad bike, given several hours on all the models there you could adjust things and feel ok .. but there is no doubt that if, when you get on a bike, it feels good from the word go then your confidence and probably results will get better.. The 270 Rev3 did that for me.

Once again, a huge thanks must go to BVM's and all the importers for putting on this test day, and John Shirt, if you read this I was almost collected by the GasGas as it went over the blokes head and came down to put a few large dents in the frame!!! On camera it would have looked great, but i can imagine he didn't own up.....
