Updated information from Paul... the 301 tuning continues.
New pictures below

Lets Recap…………………….

  • Re made the rear sub frame in ali. 50% saving in weight.
  • Re worked the whole front end (axle, spacers, disk, yokes, yoke spindle, mud guard bracket etc) saving 3 kg there alone.
  • Fitted a pair of Raptor Titanium foot pegs. Couldn’t be bothered to make any.
  • Fit ali “pro bolt” nuts and bolts in all low stress areas, ongoing.
  • Re worked all the rear end (brake area, axle, spacers, linkage etc)

Coming up....

  • Re route the front exhaust pipe lower round the side of the barrel. Not doing this as a remake will be heavier than the original so I’ve opened the old one and repacked it, see internal pic.
  • Re skin the front silencer in ali or buy the Sammy Miller Bultaco one he sells and adapt it to fit. Not doing this either as the result would not be worth the effort.
  • Scallop the barrel fins at the silencer side to allow the front silencer to pass along neatly NA
  • Reduce the barrel fins in thickness and taper them to shorter length nearer the base of the barrel. To reduce the fin thickness would be near impossible so I’ve gone for a fine length reduction with near complete removal of the bottom fin and half reduction of the 2nd one up.
  • Make a new smaller fuel cell that is lower down around the head and barrel. No progress here yet.
  • Re cast a skin only facade of the tank and seat unit. No progress here yet.
  • Maybe fit a 4 bank of small 6 volt fans for cooling. No progress here yet.
  • Look at replacing some parts of the frame that OTT in thickness. Total remake of the frame was considered until the price of aircraft grade tube was acquired at £80 per meter so a metal removal approach was taken instaed, reducing brackets to a sensible/do the job size, hacking off all the unused lugs etc and putting in some nice weight removing holes in the large expanses of flat material.
  • Release the head stock and change the fork angle to steeper reducing the wheel base an inch in the process. This near the top of the to do list.
  • At some stage split the engine, do some work in there, increase compression, reed valve conversion, look at weight reductions in the gearbox with a definite removal of 6th gear and maybe 5th. No progress here yet.
  • Maybe re make the rear shock body in ali,,,,,on a maybe though. Remake will probably not happen on a work to result basis as this is serious engineering.
