GasGas Pro Carb spacer...

I featured this a little while ago but Ian Bowers who makes them has given me some new contact details...

.. This alluminium machined spacer is a much better replacement for the rubber donut that sits on the rear of the carb so that the airfilter tube slips over it. The original one can become dislodged on the blind side and then you end up with dust and all sorts of crap inside your engine, and it is amazing how quick the bore will wear out!!

... these machined items are slightly longer than the standard one and fit perfectly with the help of some grub screws.

Available from Ian Bowers for £22 including mainland UK postage, you can reach him via:- ian@bowers45.fsnet.co.uk to order or get more information.

.. you won't regret it, saves a fortune compared to an engine re-chrome!!...

First work on the Beta...

After a bit of an off at a trial I lost my rear brake completely, turns out I had moved the banjo bolt enough to loosen it and let fluid out, or air in depends which way you like to look at it!! The Beta is a very easy bike to work an and everything fits in place very well. Here is the view after 15 minutes work... rear wheel out, rear mudguard off, silencer and centre box off and airbox removed...

... and no nasty suspension linkages to wear out!!. It is also noticable when washing the bike how much less mud it holds compared to my GasGas. There doesn't seem to be all the little traps that get the mud in that won't come back out again, obviously the linkage being a major area that is much clearer!!

I modified the carb as per the information in one of the links above to move the overflow hole up a couple of mm's. It seemed to work as i didn't need to top up the tank so often at the last trial!!

The only thing I have replaced to date is the airbox to carb rubber that had a small split in it where a screwdriver had been used to stretch it around the carb and must have slipped. Just waiting for some new rear brake pads and all done.

The only thing i need to do after each wash is drain the carb out take the flywheel cover off to allow any water to be dispersed with a squirt of wd40 type oil.

Change of stead!!

Something new in the garage to learn about!!!.. Heath has changed from the 300 GasGas to this, as new, Beta 250 Rev3. The only changes I plan to make for the moment are experimenting with the flywheel weight fitment and changing the standard footrests to Hebo ones as they get clogged with mud very quickly.. the mud has nowhere to go on the Beta ones but the Hebo's are open at the bottom. I have adjusted the carb float tags and will shortly carry out the carb mod as described in the links above to cut down on the amount of overflow... to stop any over fuel running across the casings i have put an extra long drain tube on that exits below the sump shield. Brian Curran from the TrialsCentral forum has suggested cutting a small triangular shape hole at the bottom of the flywheel cover to allow condensation and ingressed water to escape. He has had at least 4 Rev3's and so far no stator problems so i will bow to his superior knowledge!!

As I like to stand out a little It may get a set of the radycool graffics for the side of the frame and swinging arm... available from Steve Saunders.

Time of year for our annual trip up to breakheart quarry in Gloucester for the BVM Test day... They organise for all the importers to bring the new model year collection down for us to ride, and in one case try and destroy!!

My car was full to the brim with Jack, the two Steves, Rich and myself and we met up with Terry, Steve, Kev and Phil onsite... a full r2wtrials test squad!! The format is ideal, you put your name down for the next slot on whatever bike you fancy and when you have finished your 15 minute ride you pop back into the hut to get another one. Between us we managed to ride almost all of the bikes there so we can get views on the various machines from the different levels of riders that we are..

jarvis at play ..heath's trials test review .. bvm test views ..steves bvm trials test

The first image is Greame Jarvis who was on hand to talk about the new Sherco's and gave us all a couple of demo's of his easy and smooth riding style throughout the day. If you click on that photo you will get a selection of shots from his play ride. And if you click on the photo of Heath (2nd photo) on the Beta you will get his views on the bikes he rode..

The quarry that this took place in is situated up on top of the Cotswolds and is very dry but loose rocks with a traditional steep tree lined area around it.. the only conditions we couldn't test the bikes in during the day was deep mud... thankfully!!! Although we all have our personnal favorites as far as the makes of bikes go I think it would be fair to say that their wasn't anyone who hated any bike... some just felt better than others, and no two of us had the same overall top three. I will say that none of us are 4 stroke fans, so don't take it too badly that we didn't really try them..

Thanks as always to BVM Motorcycles for a brilliant day, that included amazing weather considering it has hacked it down with rain for the last couple of weeks, and is doing so now as I write this!!

click Kev or Steve's images above for their thoughts on the bikes they rode..

Tony's GasGas engine rebuild now done.. I had a chat with Kev from gasgasuk about the bearings and seals and he recommended that I rebuild it with the new style crank bearing kit. This is a set of longer bearings, an internal oil seal in each one and 2 'o'rings to stop oil travelling along the crankshaft or past the casing. You have to remove the original crankshaft collars to fit this kit but it does look like a better set-up... Picture shows old and new in comparision.

The other image shows the cranks and gearbox back in situ.. all is now back together but I had a problem.. It fired up for 30 seconds and then died!! Then it didn't want to go again... all sorts of things went through my mind, what had I left out, left undone or misplaced!! After leaving it for the night and coming back to it on sunday i eventually discovered that the flywheel key had sheared in half... causing the timing to be about 10mm out!!! Bollox! Still, nothing drastic..

We also discovered that the fan on Tony's bike wasn't working. I checked all electrical connections and operation of the thermo switch but to no avail... upon connecting the fan up to a 12 volt battery I found... that nothing happened!! Buggered!! Kev had a spare laying around from an earlier model so I am going to take it out of it's holder to see if it matches up...

..

I recieved this new chainguard from Steve at Trialcast to try out... It is a direct replacement for the original but does require you to remove the rear wheel to enable the rear bolts to be done up....

... As can be seen by the scuff marks on my swinging arm sticker it covers the point that your boots touch the chain, causing wear on expensive trials boots. My one is a 2 tone finish that looks very cool. Not sure if that is a standard option yet but if contact them via the web link above you will get all the latest options and prices.. tell them r2wtrials sent you!!

The old, Blue 2003 250 Pro now looks like this. A Keihen PWK28 carb is on the way over from Canada for it and that is the last major thing that I will do to it... I think!

I would love to have black anodised wheels and also fancy the idea of anodised black triple clamps and swinging arm. One tip.. if you have a 2005 pro and the swinging arm graphics wear off quick replace them with the 2004 ones. The new ones are paper thin but the '04's are made from the same sticker base as the tank graphic and puts up with far more. The side panel graphics are from the 2004 Raga replica but cost the same as the basic model.

I stripped the original paint off the exhaust centre box with nitromors and hand painted with a aluminium heat proof paint from Halfords. Looks almost like the ally 2004 box now but the mounting lugs don't break off!!
